News : NEW UPDATED NMC GUIDELINES REGARDING BOTOX ADMINISTRATION
(Wednesday 20th April, 2011)
Recent new guidance from the GMC and NMC, the doctors and nurses regulatory bodies, mean that the remote prescribing of botox has become unacceptable practice, and is contrary to the NMC's Standards for Medicines Management. Therefore this practice is illegal.
As botox is a prescription only medicine, legally it has to be prescribed. This is now only possible following a face to face consultation with a doctor, dentist or a nurse independent prescriber (NIP). Until this guidance was published, many nurses administered botox following a telephone conversation or video link with a prescribing doctor, who then issued the prescription via fax or email without actually seeing the patient in person, otherwise known as remote prescribing. Beauty therapists have also been known to offer botox treatments to the public. This practice is completely illegal.
This new guidance means that only Doctors, Dentists or Nurses with a prescribing qualification are able to prescribe and administer botox after actually seeing and assessing the patient in clinic. So if you are offered botox in a clinic by anyone other than a doctor, dentist or nurse prescriber walk away! It is important to always check the qualifications of the individual treating you. In the case of nurses, ask them to clarify their prescribing status. This can also be checked by visiting www.nmc-uk.org and clicking on search the register.
At bareaesthetics your treatment will only be delivered by a doctor or experienced nurse independent prescriber. We are happy to provide proof of qualifications and training.
